Designations explained:

  • A Mediator has taken at least 30 hours of mediation training.
  • An Advanced Mediator has taken at least 30 hours of mediation training, and has mediated or co-mediated at least 50 cases. The mediator is a paid member of least one recognized mediation association, OR has mediator insurance.
  • A Senior Mediator has taken at least 30 hours of mediation training, and routinely takes at least 10 hours per year of further training. The mediator has mediated or co-mediated at least 250 cases. The mediator has insurance and is affiliated with at least one recognized mediation association.
  • A Principal Mediator has taken at least 100 hours of mediation training, and routinely takes at least 10 hours per year of further training. The mediator has mediated or co-mediated at least 500 cases. The mediator has insurance and is a paid member of at least one recognized mediation association.

An affiliated association is any medation organization requiring paid membership and intended to further the practice of mediation.

Insurance implies liability insurance that will cover the mediator for the practice of mediation. Insurance can be either specially for mediation, or as a specific rider to other insurance, e.g. attorney insurance.

It is not a requirement for any Mediator Registry designation that the mediator be an attorney, and being an attorney does not in and of itself that any of the stated requirements for designation have been met.
